East African country, Ethiopia, has reportedly recorded a historic increase in coffee export amounting to over $1.8 billion.

Countries including Saudi Arabia, Germany and the United States are listed as some of the top buyers of the African nationโ€™s product.

According to the Coffee and Tea Authority on Wednesday, 354,302 tonnes of coffee were exported in the last ten months, exceeding the national target by 147% in volume and 142% in revenue.

This performance surpasses all previous annual records in the countryโ€™s export history.

The director of the agency, Dr Adugna Debela, said the figures represent an increase of 70% in volume and 87% in revenue compared to the same period last fiscal year.

Debela also noted that the sector exported 145,316.3 more tonnes, generating an additional $869.1m, reflecting both growing global demand and Ethiopiaโ€™s enhanced export capacity.

Top purchasers of Ethiopian coffee

Ethiopia, Africaโ€™s largest producer and exporter of coffee, earns primarily from both coffee and tourism.

The country, which has been struggling to finance major projects, has shifted focus slightly from the European markets.

The East African nation, which faced some setbacks due to climate change and โ€˜green squeezeโ€™ adherence from Europe, now diverts some of its products to the United States.

Speaking on this diversion, Debela said Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United States ranked as the top three destinations for Ethiopian coffee exports during the reporting period.

Germany imported 61,239 tonnes, contributing $295 million (17% of total revenue), followed closely by Saudi Arabia with 60,182 tonnes valued at $290.7 million (20%), and the United States with 28,299 tonnes accounting for $192 million (10%).

โ€œThis outstanding achievement is the result of a well-coordinated national effort,โ€ said Dr Adugna.

โ€œFrom farmers and cooperatives to exporters, regional authorities, and federal institutions โ€” all stakeholders played a vital role. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and determination,โ€ he added.
